The Two Supplements I Recommend the Most as an Early Intervention Dietitian

Note: this post is intended for educational and informational use only and does not provide individualized nutrition advice.

In my work in early intervention I find myself suggesting two specific products over and over again. Many of the kiddos I see have difficulty with eating enough, for a huge variety of reasons. While there are a lot of other ways to add value to what your child is eating or drinking, these two products offer an easy, palatable way to get some extra nutrition in.

  1. Hydrolyzed collagen powder– this powder is a source of protein, offering 11 grams per serving. It melts easily into liquids, combines well into batters and smoothies, and has almost no flavor.
  2. MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil– this is an oil made from coconut, has a slight coconut flavor, but it is easily covered by the flavors of most food and drink. It adds about 45 calories per teaspoon and can be added into bottles, combined with purees and oatmeal, or drizzled onto or into any food that you might add oil or butter to.

When working one on one with clients I will calculate an individual’s needs and make specific suggestions for usage. As with all supplements, be sure to check in with your dietitian or primary health care provider before using these products.
